Report by Process 2012 Process Paper Competition winner Geoffrey Cheung. Geoffrey was also President, Alpha Pi Mu and Secretary, Institute of Industrial Engineers Student Chapter 2011-2012 at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
At the HP Plant Tour
This year students Geoffrey Cheung and Kaveh “Kevin†Shamuilian from Cal Poly Pomona had the opportunity to go to the IIE Western Regional Conference in Oregon. They went to the conference to learn more about industrial engineering as well as to compete in the technical paper competition. Both students had a great experience over in Oregon and learned a lot not only from the sessions but from students from other schools as well and also had the opportunity to go on a plant tour at the HP facility.
The HP plant tour was not only a fun event, but a great learning experience for the students as well. As part of the plant tour the students learned and saw how large print runs of things such as newspapers are made as well as the amount of detail that goes into production and design of an ink cartridge. They were also able to play with some new print center stations that HP was testing for rollout.
At the conference Geoffrey and Kaveh met with students from many other schools and gained knowledge from them. They had a great time playing the “Beer Game†to see first-hand the disastrous effect the bullwhip effect can have on a supply chain. They also had the opportunity to talk to student leaders from other universities and learn how other schools run their IIE chapter. Both students learned new ways of doing things such as fundraising money for their chapter. From the conference sessions they learned more about the application of industrial engineering and the wide variety of options that they have in it.
This conference was a great experience and both Geoffrey and Kaveh felt like they benefitted much from it. The knowledge that they learned from this conference was already shared with other students in their IIE chapter who were unable to attend. Kaveh placed first in the Undergraduate Student Technical Paper Competition (and went on to place 3rd internationally in May 2012) and Geoffrey was the First place winner of the IIE Process Industry Division.
