ABSTRACT:

Systems engineering requires modeling, the abstract representation of something, as a means to cost effective and efficient design. The modeling process and tools have continually evolved as has technology and our understanding of cognition and systems thinking. The connecting of the various aspects of systems modeling is moving towards a robust and optimal integration of modeling the different levels of a system or a system of systems. This effort is occurring primarily in development of software tools and their integration. This presentation will review some aspects of this evolution including systems thinking, modeling software, SysML, and systems dynamics, and discuss the implications of the systems approach to systems modeling.

Following the presentation there will be a short overview of the new systems engineering program being offered by National University.

    Who:  Scott Mitchell
Why:  Learn what it takes to truly save a "dead" program
How: Feed the body, feed the mind.
    Cost: $20

    IIE Next Meeting Details

Back in December 2001, I wrote in the newsletter about the demise
of the Boeing 717 aircraft and the termination of operations
announced at the Long Beach facility.  I wrote that it was a sad
day to see the last of the commercial aircraft production leave
    the Los Angeles area.

HOWEVER, the program was given a reprieve.  The team was given a
mandate to lower the cost of the aircraft, so that at a rate of
one per month, it would still be profitable.

    The program has survived.

The 717 was meant to capture the market for short-haul air travel.
The 106-seat jet used to employ 3,000 people working on production
in and another 1,800 who provided support.

We are happy to have at our inaugural meeting for 2004, Scott
Mitchell who has been deeply involved in the transformation of
    this program using "Lean" techniques.

If you are involved within your operations with the concept of
Lean, this story is one case study that you should not miss.  As
many of you know, Lean is a journey.  This is a fascinating story
of how a huge bureaucratic division was able to "transform"
    itself
to a competitive world class performer.

Our intent is to bring VALUE to you, the membership.  Bring your
bosses, bring your friends, tell everyone you know who may be
having trouble getting to the "Goal".  This is all about
    making
    "Breakthroughs", and surviving.

Through the cooperation and support of the Boeing Co. and as added

INCENTIVE, IIE WILL WAIVE THE TRADITIONAL $20 FEE IF YOU RSVP BY

NOON ON MONDAY (3/1). Please send the names and SSN of all

    attendees to Phil Specht at:

    philip.r.specht@boeing.com

    or fax to:

    (562) 496-6064
